STEM Workshop

Mary Copenhaver and Dorothy Alexander helped with registration

Cindy Kincer, WCC biology instructor asked: “Do you have good taste?” Do foods taste the same to different people? The workshop investigated how one’s genetic makeup influences taste by having the girls taste different compounds and seeing how taste played a relevant role in evolution .

Shawn McReynolds, Director of IT at WCC, presented: “Mini-Maker Space.” Girls were challenged to use their creativity and engineering skills building zombies to flowers using a 3-D Printer, building air propelled rockets, creating their own LED greeting cards, and magnetizing LED proponents through the air!

Ashley Taylor, doctoral candidate in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, explored how engineering helps others and makes the world a better place through “Helping Hands”. Students were immersed in the engineering design process building prototypes of artificial hands that actually moved.
